Delhi. Today, on May 12, we celebrate the International Nurses Day worldwide to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern Nursing. She wrote in her personal notes that “It would take 100 to 150 years to see the kind of nursing she envisioned”. Her vision becomes true today, as the nurses have become an integral part of the system in lifting the healthcare outcomes globally.

We nurses take a lead role and prove our efficiency in healthcare delivery, hospital administration, medical education, and health care research. The entry of specialized nurses and nurse practitioners are remarkably widening the scope of practice and their contributions to the society. The matchless contributions of the nurses are dedicated to the community even during this COVID-19 pandemic, striving amidst hardships and multiple challenges that are make Nursing more visible to the society.

The Indian nurses are known for their commitment and competency, and the global demand for our nurses is very high.
Like other professions, gender balance is vital in Nursing. With the entry of male nurses into our work, it is promising in healthcare contribution and professional development.
India has 1.7 nurses per 1,000 populations, 43% less than the World Health Organization’s norm (3 per 1,000).

This includes nurses, midwives, women health visitors, and auxiliary nurse midwives. The migration of nurses due to low salary and working conditions in our country results in brain drain and is of great concern. Creating a better system for career development for nurses is vital to retain our empowered nurses in India. So that our country can be benefited from its own competent and dedicated nurses who are integral in preventive and promotive healthcare activities to build a better India.
